2nd Annual Mid Summer's day 5K[Dave Hooper]
Ian Chaney won the second Mid Summer's day 5K, in St.Annes Park today, on what proved to be the worst day of the Summer weather wise. The rain poured down in St.Annes Park today for the full duration of the race. Unfortunately this led to a poor field, but as Pat Hooper said, "it was poor in numbers, not in quailty. We are an athletic club and first and foremost we will promote athletics when we organise a race." Ian Chaney dominated the race from the start and came home in 15.41 from Bernard Roe in 15.54. The great Mick Traynor was 3rd in 16.43 and Mick Gygax 4th in 16.57, Clondankin's Gerry Simpson finished 5th in 17.16 The Women's race was a lot closer with Catherina Hooper taking the title from Barbara Sanchez in a race that last to the 200 Meters. Catherina came home in 18.46 from Barbara in 18.59. Sandra Armstrong from Sportsworld was third with Brid NiChonail 4th.
Full results and report will follow shortly. The organisers were disappointed with the turn out. Surprisingly this race's big sister the Raheny 5, which is held in January in its 22 year history there has ever only been rain on race day on two occasions. The race organiser have confirmed they will be sticking with this race and ask everyone to remember this one for the last Sunday before Mid-Summers day in the future. |
