GOOD PERFORMANCES FROM RAHENY ATHLETES IN BELFAST THE Odyssey Arena in Belfast was the venue for the AAI National Indoor championships this weekend. From a Raheny perspective top billing goes to Ciaran O'Cathain who won gold in the 60m hurdles in 8:57. This is Ciaran's second national medal - he landed a bronze medal in the 110m hurldles at the National outdoor track and field championships last summer. Three athletes, Kieran Kelly, Helen Buckley and Susan Scallan just missed out on a podium finish as they took fourth place in their respective events. In a very competitive 800m which was won by Ireland's new female running sensation Ciara Mageean in a new national junior record, Siobhan Eviston finished 8th posting a new personal best of 2:14.77.
Having won his 400m heat in 49:54 Kieran Kelly ran his best ever race in the final finishing fourth in 49:10. Susan Scallan also won her heat in the women's 400m in 59:46 and was fourth in the final in 59:15 while Helen Buckley finished 4th in the High Jump with a 1.60m effort. Jamie Davis won the 200 B final in 22.97 having earlier won his qualifying heat in 22.95, one of 11 heats! Stuart Greene was joint sixth in the pole vault with a best of 4.20m. Mihai Pantea equalled his personal best of 3.80m - it was also a new indoor PB - to finish joint 8th. Jack Connolly's 6.16m effort in the Long Jump wasn't enough to qualify for a top eight. Michael Davis competed in his first long jump competition in 3 years. Unfortunately he broke 3 times. However one of his jumps was over the 6m mark. Feidhlim Kelly ran 1:56.06 in the 800m heats on Saturday but didn't make the final. As reported already Richie Corcoran finished 5th in the 3,000m final.
